Overview
Assistant Potato Agronomist – Full-time, Year-round
Sackett Potatoes, 7335 – 7 Mile, Mecosta, Michigan 49332
Target Start Date is Early Spring 2025.
Sackett Potatoes is currently hiring an Assistant Agronomist. The job involves working with the Agronomy Team to make potato and field crop management decisions. This job offers the opportunity to work in multiple growing regions in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois.
The Agronomy Team scouts potato fields intensely during the growing season. In Michigan, these are primarily long-season variety and storage crop fields. The potato crop requires focused management to maintain plant health and potato tuber quality. All team members are expected to scout corn, wheat and potato fields, collect fall and spring fertility soil samples, petiole samples, yield estimate samples and nematode samples. Some overnight stays are required in Northeast Illinois during potato scouting months and brief periods for soil sampling in the fall and spring. Two college interns join the team each summer to help with assignments.
A qualified candidate would have experience working outdoors and be comfortable around farming operations. The hours in the summer are long and all team members are expected to work every other weekend. During fall and early spring soil sampling the work days are still 5 or 6 days a week, but there are fewer strict deadlines to meet. The work schedule is therefore less demanding during those times. The winter month work tasks include making fertility recommendations and fertilizer spread maps for multiple regions and all crops. In the winter months all agronomists are required to attend potato education related meetings and conferences. Priority is placed on continually improving the pest management and fertility knowledge of all Agronomy Team members. Management decisions are based on economic thresholds including up-to-date Integrated Pest Management (IPM) concepts.
Candidates with an agronomy focused education and work experience in potatoes are preferred. Candidates with experience in other crops are also encouraged to apply.
A work truck, ATV and equipment are provided.
This is a unique job, pay is based on experience and qualifications.
This job includes Health Insurance and Retirement Plan options.
